Vesuvius Sword – Helanthium bolivianum

While Vesuvius Sword may not have any relation to the legendary Mount Vesuvius, it earns its name by the impact it can make in an aquarium. Vesuvius Sword forms more narrow, tighter spirals than Corkscrew Val and Contortion Val, but is slightly more demanding. They are not difficult to grow as long as lighting is intense enough. The dense spiraling growth blocks light to shorter leaves, making medium-high lighting more crucial than other Helanthium bolivianum varieties.  Allowing this plant to stand on its own, rather than tucked in the background helps it to get more light. Like other varieties of chain sword, Vesuvius Sword thrives in nutrient rich substrate. Finer substrates such as soil are easier for their delicate roots to penetrate. These plants do get quite tall, and can be very striking even in large tanks.
